Fire inspections are essential for ensuring the safety and protection of your business. These inspections are required by regulations and play a crucial role in fire prevention. By conducting regular fire alarm inspections, you can proactively mitigate any potential risks and maintain a safe, protected environment for your property, employees, and tenants.

What is involved in a Fire Alarm Inspection?

In California, Commercial Fire Alarm Inspections are essential to ensure compliance with state fire safety regulations. Below are some common requirements for commercial Fire Alarm Inspections in California: Some Cities have additional requirements in addition to what is required by the State.

Annual Inspections: Commercial buildings must undergo Annual Fire Alarm system Inspections conducted by certified and trained professionals. These inspections verify that the system is functioning correctly and in accordance with state and local fire codes.

Testing and Maintenance:
Regular testing and maintenance of the Fire Alarm System are necessary to ensure its properly functioning. This includes testing Manual Pull Stations, Smoke and Heat Detectors, Fire Alarm Control Panels, Annunciators (keypads) and Communication into the Central Station from the Fire Alarm System. In addition, the Technician will also be testing the connections from the Fire Alarm System into the Sprinkler System to ensure that if Sprinklers Activate, it will activate alarms and dispatch accordingly.

Frequency of Inspection and Testing:  Fire Alarm Systems at minimum are required to be inspected and tested once a year. If it also has Sprinklers, it is required to be tested by the Fire Alarm Company twice a year. During the Semi-Annual Inspection, the technician will test Communication from the System to the Central Station, the Fire Alarm Control Panel, and any connections from the Fire Alarm System into the Sprinkler System. During the Annual Inspection, the Technician will also test all devices connected into the system in addition to batteries and supervision of the Fire Alarm System. 

Compliance with Codes: The Fire Alarm system must comply with California Fire Code, National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards, and other relevant regulations. Any deficiencies identified during inspections must be promptly addressed to ensure compliance.

Notification Requirements: In the event of a fire alarm system being out of service for maintenance or repairs, the local fire department and relevant authorities must be notified to prevent any delays in emergency response. In addition, if the Fire Alarm System is not completely operation, then it is required for the system to be on Fire Watch until it becomes operational and protecting the premesis.
